(07-03) 17:43 PDT SAN JOSE -- Three Los Gatos hills residents charged with booby-trapping a road and seriously injuring their motorcyclist neighbor pleaded not guilty to assault charges in a San Jose courtroom Monday.

The trial for Edward Anderson, 48, his girlfriend, Donna Olsen, 46, and neighbor Donald Bryant, 62, is now scheduled for Aug. 21 in a case closely watched by back-country motorcycle enthusiasts and environmentalists opposed to motorcycles in rural areas.

The three are accused of stringing a taut rope or other object across Loma Chiquita Road in unincorporated Santa Clara County on May 6 and knocking Robert Barnes off his motorcycle as he rode by.

Barnes, who lives up the street from the trio, was struck across the upper lip, hurling him 30 feet from his motorcycle and leaving him with 500 stitches, missing teeth and titanium plates in his head, Barnes and police said.

Olsen and Bryant are both charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon for the attack on Barnes, 46, and another biker in his group who was slightly injured. Anderson is facing one count of assault with a deadly weapon. Olsen has not posted bail but the other defendants have.
